Update: Meetings Continue to be CANCELED

posted Jan 28, 2021, 4:51 PM by Orlando Scrabble

It's a new year, and it's time for an update on the Orlando Scrabble Club's activities.

Meetings Canceled Until Further Notice:

Unfortunately, all Orlando Scrabble Club face-to-face activities continue to be canceled until further notice.

We will resume in-person meetings only when it is deemed safe to do so, which may be many months from now.

New Year Reflections:

2020 was a year full of many sad, strange, and difficult times.  It was the year of COVID, of masks everywhere, of online everything.  If anyone reading this got sick or lost a loved one, you have our heartfelt sympathies.  With vaccines, better treatments, and better strategies on the way, we have some hope that 2021 will be a better year on the coronavirus front.

Though it pales in comparison to other woes, our Scrabble lives were also upended in 2020.  Most of us went from several weekly games at clubs (and tournaments) to zero over-the-board games in the blink of an eye, way back in the month of March 2020.

We've still got a long way to go before the coronavirus is better under control, but together we'll get through this.  Get the vaccine when you can.  Wear your mask.  Be smart.   Keep Scrabbling -- online, until we can start to get together in person again.

We will, of course, be in touch when the Orlando Scrabble Club can resume in-person meetings -- we don't have a crystal ball, but we estimate that this *could* be possible as soon as the the summer or fall of 2021, assuming that vaccine distribution goes well and that safety guidelines continue to be loosened at the local, state, and national levels.  Any such announcement, or any other important updates, will be communicated via email, the club website, and the club Facebook page.

In the meantime, happy new year!  Here's hoping 2021 is better in every way!

Online Gatherings:

It's not the same as the real thing, but... many members have been meeting and playing games online on Mondays during the pandemic. Contact Tim for more information.

We look forward to a time when we can return to playing the game that we love in person and over real boards.  In the meantime, take care, stay safe, and we hope to see you... online.

ALL CLUB MEETINGS CANCELED Until Further Notice

posted Jul 24, 2020, 5:52 PM by Orlando Scrabble

The Orlando Scrabble Club went on hiatus starting in mid-March, and all club meetings remain canceled until further notice.

By way of an update, all we can say at this time is that the North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) recently published updated guidance "on when and how to resume competitive SCRABBLE activities."  Unfortunately, the guidance suggests that we will not be playing face-to-face Scrabble for a very long time.  For more details, please see NASPA's extensive COVID-19 page at:

To reiterate, we will resume meetings only when it is safe to do so.  Any such announcement, or any other important updates, will be communicated via email, the club website, and the club Facebook page.

We look forward to a time when we can return to playing the game that we love in person and over real boards.  In the meantime, take care, stay safe, and we hope to see you... online.

2020 Season 1 Stats Summary

posted Jul 24, 2020, 5:44 PM by Orlando Scrabble

calculator imageThe 2020 Season 1 Stats Summary is now available, either right on our Current Stats page or (if you prefer) as a printable PDF download.

The season was unfortunately halted abruptly in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, the end-of-season summary still contains all of the usual final standings, statistics, and notes on play!

We hope you enjoy reading it -- and that it will help you look forward to a time when we can play over the board again!

In the meantime, club meetings remain canceled until further notice.  We will resume club meetings only when it is safe to do so.  Please continue to monitor our website for updates.

All Meetings CANCELED and Club ON HIATUS Until Further Notice

posted Mar 13, 2020, 10:19 AM by Orlando Scrabble

The Orlando Scrabble Club is going on an indefinite hiatus, effective immediately.  All club meetings are canceled until further notice.

We will resume meetings when it is safe to do so.

We did not make this decision lightly.  We came to this conclusion after monitoring the local and national situation related to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).  Of particular note for us:
  • Cases of COVID-19 are beginning to be reported in central Florida, and more are likely coming
  • Playing Scrabble involves close quarters and the sharing of tiles, tile bags, and other equipment
  • We have many players who are in high-risk groups
At this time, we believe it is important to prioritize health and safety over the playing of a board game.

Important updates will be communicated via email, the club website, and the club Facebook page.

Until we see you next:
Please stay safe, follow the advice of local and national authorities, and... WASH YOUR HANDS frequently!

Next Tile Talk on Feb 24th

posted Feb 18, 2020, 9:12 PM by Orlando Scrabble

Our next Tile Talk will be offered this coming Monday, February 24th, from 6:30-6:55 p.m.!

Local expert players Ed L and Tim will be offering an occasional series of short Scrabble lessons in the coming months, in which they will be leading discussions designed to improve your game!  These Tile Talks will take place at our usual Wirz Park venue, right before the start of regular club sessions.  (Attendance at the talks are optional, of course, and will have no bearing on the session to follow.)

tile talk imageThe topic for this session is....

Board Management
In many games, you can help shape the board in ways that will improve your chances!  Sometimes this involves creating an "open" board, full of open lines and bingo opportunities.  Other times, this involves striving for a "closed" board with much less volatility.  In this lesson, we'll talk about when to play offense vs. defense, how and when to open (or close) the board, and other such considerations.

In short, make plans to attend our next Tile Talk on Monday, February 24th!  It will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and conclude by 7:00, after which our regular club session will begin.
